Old English (Englisc), also called Anglo-Saxon, is an early form of the English language that was spoken and written in parts of what are now England and south-eastern Scotland between at least the mid-5th century and the mid-12th century. What survives through writing represents primarily the literary register of Anglo-Saxon. It is a West Germanic language and is closely related to Old Frisian. It also experienced heavy influence from Old Norse, a member of the related North Germanic group of languages. DevelopmentFurther information: History of the English languageOld English was not static, and its usage covered a period of approximately 700 years – from the Anglo-Saxon migrations that created England in the 5th century to some time after the Norman Conquest of 1066 when the language underwent a dramatic transition. During this early period it assimilated some aspects of the languages with which it came in contact, such as the Celtic languages and the two dialects of Old Norse from the invading Vikings, who occupied and controlled large tracts of land in northern and eastern England, which came to be known as the Danelaw. GNU Free Documentation License How do you think English would be today, if Old English was never changed by the French? Q. When changed it added new words such as Old French = stomach, Old English = gut, Old French = mucus, Old English = snot. Do you think another language would have influenced or it would have stayed the same as it was? Also adding of other language such as Latin and Greek. Asked by Young Raelian - Thu Sep 11 09:25:36 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. English of course has up to 40% of its vocabulary from French and also from Latin. It is a Germanic language though and if you have a look at Old English, you can see just how much English has changed over the last millenium. Of course you have Greek and not to mention the fact English is an extremely flexible language, as in it can absorb words from other languages. Take for example the word 'oversee'. It could also be 'overlook' in native English. However, via French there is another word namely 'supervise' and not to mention 'survey'. These ultimately derive from Latin. Over, super and sur mean above respectively and see, look, vise, "vey" relate to sight or vision. Also note how English has given a new meaning for survey, though it… [cont.] Answered by viet_forever_more - Thu Sep 11 09:48:39 2008 At what point in time was old English spoken? Q. Answered by M'aidez! - Tue May 26 18:04:31 2009 How do you use the old English font face on a website.?
Q. I'm making a website for this guy and I need to use the old english fontface on it. Can anyone tell me how or where to download it. I really need help. Asked by Cal - Mon Jun 19 18:50:50 2006 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Actually, if you use a font face, and you don't have it downloaded, it is probably a bad font to use. Because a user cannot use the font unless they have it downloaded on your computer. If you absolutely must use the font, you could consider making it an image, but that would most likely be an extremely bad idea because: 1. The website would be unreadable by people with text-only browsers. (There are ways around this) 2. The website would be unreadable by robots like search engine crawlers, which would make it difficult for people to find your site. (Ways around this too) 3. This is the biggy: Users couldn't select text, or search text, or whatever. But, anyway, I usually use CSS instead of plain HTML to put font on a site, so I don't… [cont.] Answered by Asbestos - Mon Jun 19 19:01:49 2006 From Yahoo Answer Search: "old english" From Wikiquote under the GNU Free Documentation License.
