The 10th century is the period from 901 to 1000 in accordance with the Julian calendar in the Christian/Common Era.

The tenth century is usually regarded as a low point in European history. In China it was also a period of political upheaval. In the Muslim World, however, it was a cultural zenith, especially in Spain. Additionally, the 10th century was the zenith for the Byzantine and Bulgarian Empires.

Medievalist and historian of technology Lynn White said that "to the modern eye, it is very nearly the darkest of the Dark Ages", but concluded that ". . . if it was dark, it was the darkness of the womb." Similarly, Helen Waddell wrote that the tenth century was that which "in the textbooks disputes with the seventh the bad eminence, the nadir of the human intellect." Even in the fifteenth century, Lorenzo Valla described it as the Century of Lead and Iron and later Cardinal Baronius as the Leaden Century or Iron Century.

A. English literature. The first works in English, written in Old English, appeared in the early Middle Ages (the oldest surviving text is Caedmon's Hymn). The oral tradition was very strong in the early English culture and most literary works were written to be performed. Epic poems were thus very popular and many, including Beowulf, have survived to the present day in the rich corpus of Anglo-Saxon literature that closely resemble today's Icelandic, Norwegian, North Frisian and the Northumbrian and Scots English dialects of modern English. What language did the Germanic Tribes speak in the 10th Century?
Q. My Wife and I are in the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) and play the part of 10th Century Germanic people. As part if this I thought it would be interesting to learn to speak the language used by the Germanic Tribes at that time but I've not been able to find any real solid answers about what language they spoke. I know that Gothic was pretty well dead by the 10th Century but that "German" hadn't came into existence yet. If anyone out there knows the answer help please.
