Q. I recently read Anthem, largely because I had read much about Rand on YA, the Newsnight discussion of Atlas Shrugged helped. What struck me about Anthem was the spartan eloquence of her prose and the romantic-individualistic swansong she writes on the last two chapters. The appeal for me was not so much in the ideas she propounds, but rather the passion and beauty of their expression. The ideas I found struck me as a mixture of the obvious (man as an individual, objective reality), the naive (the evils of collectivism) and the loosely reasoned, movement from the absolute arch-type evil collectivism to the libertarian dream. Indeed, Rand doesn t seem to leave middle ground. I am also rather distrustful of rationalism in politics and Rand… [cont.] Asked by Comrade Heathcliff - Fri Apr 17 17:52:06 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. Anthem was her begining, Fountain Head was her lesson and Atlas Shrugged was her masterpiece. Rand is not a worthy prophet to follow, but she is a sincerely interesting person and philosopher and writer from whom to learn. I personally believe that her philosophy is limited, especially as it is espoused by modern devotees. Even within those limitations, there is much to learn on a very enjoyable ride. She is worthy of incorporating into many a political perspective, even if you do not hold with her lock and key. Do read her primary works, they are well worth it. Fountain Head and Atlast Shrugged will not be a waste of your time and you will enjoy the escape, world she creates and lesson she teaches. That you will see her plot holes… [cont.] Answered by MV Moonsong - Sat Apr 18 00:32:58 2009 English homework help needed!!! Please! For these English terms I need examples and citations.? Q. There are many more, but I don't exactly remember. Syntax A normal sentence in English contains a subject, verb and an object. for example : John (subject) is watching (verb) the baseball match (object) An example of a descriptive rule of English syntax is that in the imperative in English, the verb takes the initial position in the sentence, usually directly before the noun which is the object. Q. I earlier answered a question and got quite an volatile email in response from another member. I'm curious to get some other opinions. There was a very non-specific question regarding what mistakes to avoid when writing, to which a host of users/writers responded with things - mostly 'don't do this in a story', 'don't write like this', 'don't use this style, it irritates me', and 'don't write stories about this'. I responded by saying said that allowing other writers to specifically tell someone how or how not to write would stifle a new author's creativity and style. I said that writing styles are as unique and individual as any other art form. Imagine if Picasso gave up because other artists didn't like his works, or if he actually… [cont.] Asked by Not just any chick - Sat Jan 3 15:57:40 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. There's always several things to consider when one is handing out advice about writing to a writer or would be writer. First and foremost is that any so called "rules" are merely things to think about. That needs to be an understanding on the part of the advice giver and the advice seeker. Being "pigeonholed" is a natural occurrence for any artist of any art. If you try to avoid being pigeonholed you'll have successfully pigeonholed yourself as literary, or avant-garde, or whatever the hot word of the moment is for someone who doesn't want to be pigeonholed. Regardless, it's going to happen, and it has it's benefits. But the key is to realize what your choice is, and choose it because it works for you, not because that's the advice… [cont.] Answered by "Vet" - Sat Jan 3 17:00:24 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Individual Prose Works"
