A macron, from the Greek μακρόv (makrón), meaning "long", is a diacritic placed above a vowel (and, more rarely, under or above a consonant). It was originally used to mark a long syllable in Græco-Roman metrics, but now also indicates that the vowel is long. (This is the opposite of a breve ˘, used to indicate originally a short syllable and now also a short vowel.) Distinctions between long and short vowels are often phonemic. In the International Phonetic Alphabet the macron is used to indicate mid tone; the sign for a long vowel is a modified triangular colon.

Syllable weight

In Græco-Roman metrics and in the description of the metrics of other literatures, the macron was introduced and is still widely used to mark a long (i.e., heavy) syllable. Even the best and relatively recent classical Greek and Latin dictionaries are still only concerned with indicating the length (i.e., weight) of syllables; that is why most still do not indicate the length of vowels in syllables that are otherwise metrically determined. Though many textbooks about ancient Rome and Greece employ the macron, it was not actually used at that time.

Where can I find Latin texts with long vowels marked (macrons)?
Q. Does anyone know of a source on the Internet where a large amount of Latin text can be found that has long vowels marked. Ideally I'd like something authentic, like Caesar's De Bello Gallico with macrons added, but any long continuous text would be good. What I'm not looking for is exercise sentences. Gratias vobis ago!

A. Here's an old book of Bello Gallico with notes by Greenough that you can download for free. It's so good, I bought a used copy. The text reads continuously, all 7 books, and the copious notes are separate. And this one does have the macrons marked.

In Latin personal pronouns, are there macrons over the accusative forms?
Q. Me and Te. Do they have macrons? I can't find it online because nobody can figure out how to put macrons in HTML so they don't bother...and I just can't remember.

A. i assume by macrons, you mean long marks? o well thats wat my teacher calls them. YES the accusative forms do have long marks above them. me and te have a long mark in both the accusative and ablative singular. It is really annoying that these marks are not on any computers. I tried to put them into a document in my word processor, but there were no characters for it. (cuz unlike french or spanish, it is dead) This gets very annoying when i make study guides and have to add in the long marks myself!!!

Where do the macrons go in this?
Q. "moriturus te salutat" What letters do the macrons go over? I was in latin a long time ago, so I think this is grammatically correct, but I can't remember where the macrons go. it's supposed to be a variation of "morituri te salutant", i know it's not the same thing :P

A. Macrons were added by latter- day Latin grammarians to indicate what they theorised were long vowels; they did not appear in original Roman texts. Actually, I'm fairly sure there are none in the phrase you have quoted. By the way, if, as your avatar suggests, you are a lady and you intend this to refer to yourself, it would be 'moritura' (no macron on the 'a').
