Why it matters is because it always matters how people perceive something tobe, whether it's technically true or not. Example: Vernacularly speaking, the Mormon/"Jello" Belt of the country is typically thought of as just southeastern Idaho and Utah. That much of north and western Nevada, as well as Eastern Wyoming and Northwestern New Mexico also fit in this region, just looking at statistics, doesn't matter in the "vernacular" sense. What society's informal definition of a region is doesn't always fit with reality, butit does say a lot about how we view such a place. Colloquial is defined as characteristic of or appropriate to conversation but not to formal writing. Vernacular is defined as the normal spoken language of a country or region as distinct from literary or learned language. The second definition, however, categorizes vernacular as the idiom of a particular trade or profession, which brings it closer in definition to jargon and which is, I think, the way we most often hear the term today. .
