Do the works of Ayn Rand justify the hype?
Q. I recently read Anthem, largely because I had read much about Rand on YA, the Newsnight discussion of Atlas Shrugged helped. What struck me about Anthem was the spartan eloquence of her prose and the romantic-individualistic swansong she writes on the last two chapters. The appeal for me was not so much in the ideas she propounds, but rather the passion and beauty of their expression. The ideas I found struck me as a mixture of the obvious (man as an individual, objective reality), the naive (the evils of collectivism) and the loosely reasoned, movement from the absolute arch-type evil collectivism to the libertarian dream. Indeed, Rand doesn t seem to leave middle ground. I am also rather distrustful of rationalism in politics and Rand… [cont.]

A. Anthem was her begining, Fountain Head was her lesson and Atlas Shrugged was her masterpiece. Rand is not a worthy prophet to follow, but she is a sincerely interesting person and philosopher and writer from whom to learn. I personally believe that her philosophy is limited, especially as it is espoused by modern devotees. Even within those limitations, there is much to learn on a very enjoyable ride. She is worthy of incorporating into many a political perspective, even if you do not hold with her lock and key. Do read her primary works, they are well worth it. Fountain Head and Atlast Shrugged will not be a waste of your time and you will enjoy the escape, world she creates and lesson she teaches. That you will see her plot holes… [cont.]
