Old English (Englisc, Anglisc, Ænglisc) or Anglo-Saxon is an early form of the English language that was spoken and written by the Anglo-Saxons and their descendants in parts of what are now England and south-eastern Scotland between at least the mid-5th century and the mid-12th century. What survives through writing represents primarily the literary register of Anglo-Saxon. It is a West Germanic language and is closely related to Old Frisian. It also experienced heavy influence from Old Norse, a member of the related North Germanic group of languages. DevelopmentFurther information: History of the English languageOld English was not static, and its usage covered a period of approximately 700 years – from the Anglo-Saxon migrations that created England in the 5th century to some time after the Norman Conquest of 1066 when the language underwent a dramatic transition. During this early period it assimilated some aspects of the languages with which it came in contact, such as the Celtic languages and the two dialects of Old Norse from the invading Vikings, who occupied and controlled large tracts of land in northern and eastern England, which came to be known as the Danelaw. I personally enjoy the language and would love to learn it, but do you think it is a very valuble skill, or would it just be a waste of my time? You'd give us new translations and new perspectives on a variety of texts. Besides, learning any academic is not an end in itself. You'd acquire more than skills. You'd be more educated and behave much better at tea or at an introduction. Go for it. Q. I plan on getting a dog someday. I am single and live in an apartment. I love big dogs. I have always wanted an Old English Sheep dog. They are so cute and fluffy. Would it be cruel to keep one in an apartment? I would walk it, of course. A girl next door to me has a Great Dane and he seems fine in her apartment. Thoughts? Asked by he1ididog - Wed Mar 11 08:36:51 2009 - - 13 Answers - 0 Comments A. Cruel no, difficult, probably. They are really big dogs with a lot of 'leap' - and FUR!!! Oh, by the way, they can also bark...you do realize they are SHEEP dogs, right? Seriously, you would be better off with something a bit smaller - if you want fluffy, a Tibetan Terrier is hairy but on a smaller scale. The other consideration might be adopting a senior dog from rescue, which would mean less activity. However - you really need to ask your local groomer just how much it will cost to maintain an OES - it is a huge job, and you may be floored by the price. It is not a job for wimps, and even with experience, I don't have one! It takes 9 hours to groom an OES for show...just to give you an idea. That is part of the reason… [cont.] Answered by Rosalie - Wed Mar 11 08:50:29 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "old english" From Wikiquote under the GNU Free Documentation License.
