[oʊ], pronounced with an open vocal tract so that there is no build-up of air pressure at any point above the glottis. This contrasts with consonants, such as English sh! [ʃː], where there is a constriction or closure at some point along the vocal tract. A vowel is also understood to be syllabic: an equivalent open but non-syllabic sound is called a semivowel. In all languages, vowels form the nucleus or peak of syllables, whereas consonants form the onset and (in languages which have them) coda. However, some languages also allow other sounds to form the nucleus of a syllable, such as the syllabic l in the English word table [ˈteɪ.bl̩] (the stroke under the l indicates that it is syllabic; the dot separates syllables), or the r in Serbian vrt [vr̩t] "garden". There is a conflict between the phonetic definition of "vowel" (a sound produced with no constriction in the vocal tract) and the phonological definition (a sound that forms the peak of a syllable). The approximants [j] and [w] illustrate this conflict: both are produced without much of a constriction in the vocal tract (so phonetically they seem to be vowel-like), but they occur on the edge of syllables, such as at the beginning of the English words "yes" and "wet" (which suggests that phonologically they are consonants). The American linguist Kenneth Pike suggested the terms 'vocoid' for a phonetic vowel and "vowel" for a phonological vowel, so using this terminology, [j] and [w] are classified as vocoids but not vowels. The word vowel comes from the Latin word vocalis, meaning "speaking", because in most languages words and thus speech are not possible without vowels. Vowel is commonly used to mean both vowel sounds and the written symbols that represent them. From Wikipedia under the

But, i was wondering if you would say bel hospital or beau hospital. Because i dont konw if the h is considered a vowel. Please help? Asked by Olivia - Sun Jan 11 17:49:18 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. we call it a mute consonant but not all the times, some the "h" is for nothing. ex: un hopital, we pronounce un nopital but for the animal un hibou we do not say un nibou but un ibou, however most of the words starting with a H are like hopital, another example with the word bean: un haricot, we don't say un naricot but un aricot (no connection), also des haricots, we do not say des zaricots, but des aricots. Answered by jorge c - Wed Jan 14 10:06:36 2009 How do you know when there's a short vowel in arabic? Q. I'm taking a language class in Arabic- and i'm extremely confused as to how you recognise when you're suppose to indicate there is a short vowel, especially since most literature and dictionaries on the web don't include the symbol indicating a short vowel sound. Help!!! Asked by Vicky B - Sun Aug 30 20:51:36 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Peace be upon you, I think a short vowel is the : A- E- OU on top of the Arabic letters. If you took Arabic grammar, then you are expected to know exactly how to pronounce every word, even when the "short vowels" do not exist. Have you taken? if yes, then can you clarify your question. If no, ask your teacher to help you learn them. You won't learn them unless you become very good in your Arabic skills. I started taking basic grammar in 4th primary, and I am a native Arabic speaker. The answer is: learn Arabic grammar. Good luck. Q. The method must: have one parameter that is an array of Strings return an array of Strings the array returned consists of those Strings in argument that begin with a vowel the argument array should remain unaltered Example: If I call the method with an argument array consisting of Tom Lenny Arnold Eli Marcus it would return an array consisting of Arnold Eli while the argument array would still have all 5 Strings. Thanks! Asked by zxsaveyourselfxz - Thu Oct 29 12:56:56 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Looks like a homework question to me :) I'll try to help you out by guiding you in the right direction. You will have to write a method that will take the String[] as an argument (text[ ]) and return another String array (returnText[ ]). Within the method it iterates through the array length and check if each String starts with a vowel. You will have to use "startsWith()" method of String class and checks against all vowels in a simple if statement using "OR" operator. It would look something like: for(int i=0; i< text.length; i++) { if(text[i].startsWith("A" ) || text[i].startsWith("E") || text[i].startsWith("I") || text[i].startsWith("O") || text[i].startsWith("U")){ then you append that String to returnText[].
